New Mexico - El Malpais National Monument

El Malpais National Monument is where sharp lava meets smooth sandstone.  El Malpais means "the bandlands" in Spanish and includes ancient volcano cones, stark lava flows, a lava tube cave system, and fragile ice caves.  La Ventana Natural Arch is the largest of New Mexico's arches easily reached by road.  La Ventana was eroded from sandstone dating back to the ago of dinasaurs.  At one point along the park road, lava flows are clearly visible along one side of the road while sandstone cliffs tower over 500 feet high on the other side of the road.  It was impossible to capture the extreme differences on a photo.
