Florida - More Bradenton Activities

As some of you may know, the sculpture, Unconditional Surrender, prompted by the historic photo of a nurse and a sailor taken in Time Square upon the announcement of Japanese surrender of WWII, has stood along the Sarasota waterfront for many years.  However, it took a white Mercedes to convince this nurse to totally surrender to her handsome sailor.  The driver of the white Mercedes suffered a "medical emergency", crossed three lanes of traffic and a median strip before punching a large hole in the sailor's leg.  The sculpture will be shipped to New Jersey for repairs by the original artist.

We went to the Desoto Heritage Parade last week.  It was a lot of fun, over 200 floats and marching bands.  Heavy rains came down for about 20 minutes soaking the participants and parade watchers but it didn't stop the fun.

My sister Carol came down this past weekend.  We spent four hours kayaking in Robinson Preserve on Saturday morning.  It was a beautiful sunny day with a nice breeze to keep us comfortable.  It was a bit of a paddle getting back as the tide was coming in and we were going against the wind.

Saturday evening we went to a play, The Full Monty, at the Sarasota Players Theatre.  It was very funny and we had a great time.

Sunday we attended a Memorial Service at the Bradenton Beach Moose Lodge for deceased members.  My father's name was included and they even mentioned that he had built the bar.  It was a very nice service.  Carol and I spent the rest of the afternoon on the beach.  The gulf waters are in the 80s already!
